FAMILY DAYCARE
On the first day of school I would take a photo of the individual child and then one of the child and his/her family, this builds a sense of identity. Children will be able to recognize their cubby by their picture and name. I also take the family photo and make a book out if them so that if they get sad they can see a picture. I use this photo on their name tag, and even on their name stick.
Also I would have them make a self-portrait(which would stay in their portfolio, I have the children make a self-portrait monthly so parents can see their fine motor and eye-coordination skills improve, also the details that children acquire).
During circle I do family songs that represented diversity and culture of all children, I'd do rhymes, and even read books to children.
For parents I'd have a monthly educational parent meeting, at the parent meetings I would include a potluck so that parents can make their cultural foods monthly. I'd also include a cultural day per month where parents can introduce their foods, music, toys, clothes, etc.
I'd like to include a quiet area, where children are able to read, write, or even listen to music quietly, this would have to be available to them, but would have to be apart from other areas.
I feel one of the most important areas in the classroom would be art: I'd have many different kinds of paints, painting papers, painting materials, easels. And lots of recycled materials that children can create with such as: toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, egg cartons, strawberry baskets, newspaper, materials to help them with their creativity.
In the play area I would include dolls, clothes, foods, props, posters, even cooking utensils from different cultures (as cited in Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2010).
