CHILDREN AND CONVERSATIONS

OBSERVATION-I was at a friend's house, I observed a nearly 4 year old and his mother at their house watching a movie and eating pizza with another family. After observing them interact what I noticed that neither parent communicated with the child very much. He would showed his dad his lego train "look dad, I made a big train to ride on", dad replied, "nice". After he colored a picture in a color book and showed his mother,"mommy I made this for you, do you like it?", mom replied "Yes". What I noticed is that there is a limited amount of communication between the child and his parents. There were no open-ended questions, I didn't hear not even 1 probing question, neither was there "challenging talk", (2010). YC: Young Children65(1), 74-81.).

After hearing this I know the importance of talking to children, when parents and teachers talk to children this enhances their vocabulary, cognitive skills, also how to interact with others. Not only do I need to ask open questions, I need to build upon what the children are already talking about, I need to ask questions and even when doing something talk about it with children step by step.
