I choose middle east and northern africa because I know little to nothing about this region, I have done little research on this region and I'm interested in seeing how the people and children live.
CHILD SURVIVAL AND DEVELOPMENT-Due to limited health and vaccination services nearly 415,000 children die yearly. This program also promotes adequate feeding practices trying to alleviate malnutrition by providing vitamins and water.
Here are some alarming facts from across the region:
• Nine out of 10 children experience violent forms of discipline. • One out of 10 children is involved in child labour. • Approximately 6 million children are orphaned. • The Islamic Republic of Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen are four out of five countries worldwide that continue to apply the death penalty to children. • Female genital mutilation affects 93 per cent of women in Djibouti and 91 per cent in Egypt.
Because of these harsh circumstances I can't imagine the influences that they must have on young children living in this particular region. Personally I will take it upon myself if I do have children and families from this region to assist them in any manner possible, I will make them aware of any resources in our community to help in a possible way.

Tinka,
ReplyDeleteIt amazes me sometimes when I see how people and children live in other parts of the world. I hate seeing children hurt and I am like you, I just want to help them in anyway I can. As professionals we have to stay current in resources so that we will be able to help those families and children in need. I was wondering have you ever had to interact with a family that came from a struggling region, if so how did you deal with that professionally? I look forward to your response and thanks for sharing.

Tinka,
ReplyDeleteWow, I was very surprised to hear that the death penalty has ever applied to children in any country! It is so unfortunate that our world can still be so cruel. It is also sad to think about how so many children are suffering as a result of influences over which they have no control, such as health services and vaccines. In your research, did you find out if there are any initiatives and/or programs in place that are working to relieve these struggles for children in this region?
It is amazing, yet VERY SAD how poverty can have such an impact on an entire country. It's like a domino effect that never ends. Due to lack of funds/resources people suffer can't recieve proper healthcare; people commit senseless crimes; children are faced with child labour and/or sexual exploitation; people lack an education; people die young and/or repeat the cycle over and over again! This is really sad reveals to us that this could very well be our own student (in which more and more of these same people are starting to migrate into our very own country and our very own classrooms).
ReplyDeleteThis is also an area of the world that I am extremely interested. There is such a range of trauma. It is so sad how children in this area are forced to grow up. These children are so focused on immediate needs that they are unable to develop higher order ideas such as del esteem and identity.
ReplyDeleteThis really was an assignment that was an awakening to us who have not heard of all of the appalling things that go on in other countries with our children. These children, like all others, want to be able to live healthy and happy lives but are unable to because of violence and poverty and malnutrition and health problems. We have to raise our voices and help UNICEF in making all people aware of the problems in these countries. If we can just help with supplying water and food, this would help these children. A lot of them do not live past the age of five and are know living in countries like ours that have so many resources.
