As Psalms and Isabella were on the slide, Isabella was about to go down the slide and said "Bye mommy". Psalms said "that's your mom?', Isabella said "yes", Psalms said "no she can't be your mom, you're white and she's really brown". Isabella was trying to convince her that I was her real mother. I used this as a learning experience and told Psalms, just because we have different color of skin doesn't mean that I'm not her mother. I am her mother, I'm mexican-american, and her dad's caucasian, and Isabellas half mexican and half caucasian.
This was a very informative conversation between both children, I could've scolded the child or told her that was mean, but instead used it as a learning experience.
Tinka- this story reminded me of my girls when they were about 3 and 5, they asked me "mommy why are you the only white one in the family?" At first I just stared at them I was a little shocked that they realized this at such a young age. I laughed and just told them that God wanted them to look like their dad and that I look like my dad. I know it was not the best response but this was about 18 years ago and I was also young. I think they spent many years thinking that God wants people to look like their dads, but it made sense to them because of how our family looks. Thanks for sharing.
