Perspectives on Diversity and Culture

According to John Tyo "culture is how people live, a certain way of life, where they come from, their beliefs".
As Tinka Cisneros(13) said "diversity is the color of our skin, where we live, what we do in our own houses".
According to the Panelists, "Different family lifestyles, where families come from where they’re born. The rules and beliefs that families have, also the involvement that family members have.

Pertaining to the class readings according to Gonzalez-Mena, J.,"Knowledge about deep culture is when a person becomes familiar with gender, ethnic background, class, sexual orientation, religion, custom, language, beliefs and age of another person. When becoming familiar with another person’s “deep” culture you’re really digging and getting to know them. If you’re familiar with other’s “deep” culture then you are familiar with your own, causing compassion understanding, knowledge, and acceptance"(2008).
I can see similarities between what people perceive culture and diversity as in comparison to what is being studied in the class. I also see the difference between culture and "deep culture". People are not looking at culture in the ENTIRE aspect.

After hearing my interviewees answers I see how people forget to include the entire culture which is language, religious beliefs, home traditions, gender, age even customs. I need to make sure to include all aspects of culture and diversity when teaching my class. I need to make an effort to really get to know my students, their culture/diversity, etc.

  1. Hi Tinka,
After this assignment and your description of deep culture I am very excited to find out more about the people I live and work with. It really does create compassion and understanding that is the missing link in our lives. Thank you for a great post.

  2. Hello Tinka,
I do believe the term "deep culture" has given us all something to think about. We are definitely learning how to "see" people.

  3. Tinka,

I felt the same way. None of my respondents spoke to deep culture as they did just culture. This assignment and course is helping me to be a better teacher and director. The center I work at has always had poor parent involvement but I see why now. The program wasn't taking time to learn and accept each different family's deep culture. I believe this is important enough to be taught to high school seniors. It really makes me think about the lack of knowledge pertaining to deep culture that there is in my location.
