NAEYC AND DEC CODES

NAEYC CODES
I-1.1-To be familiar with the knowledge base of early childhood care and education and to stay informed through continuing education and training.
This is important to me because I feel it is important as educators to stay up to date with current trends.

I-1.3-To recognize and respect the unique qualities, abilities of each child.
I feel children are unique and should be respected for their differences.

I-1.10-To ensure that each child's culture, language, ethnicity, and family structure are recognized and valued in the program.
Being that I teach in such diverse community it is important that I always consider each child's and families culture, language, ethnicity, and family structure.

DEC CODE
Professional and Interpersonal Behavior
1. We shall demonstrate in our behavior and language respect and appreciation for the unique value and human potential in each child.
As teachers we need to be respectful to our students and despite their un preferred behaviors know that there is potential in all children.

Enhancement of Children's and Families' Qualities of Life
4. We shall advocate for equal access to high quality services and supports for all children and families to enhance their quality of life.
It is so important as teachers that we advocate for our children and families, being that we teach preschool this is most likely their first time in an educational setting.

Evidence Based Practices
2. We shall use every resource including referral when appropriate to ensure high quality services are accessible and are provided to children and families.
As teacher's we need to provide high quality care to all of our families.

I chose these different codes from the NAEYC and DEC because these are the basis of my personal philosophy.

  1. I like how you pointed out that despite a child's un preferred behavior that you need to to show them respect and appreciation. I believe it is those children who need it the most! It can be so frustrating to work day after day with a child who can push your buttons or test you every chance they get. Making it even more important to look beyond our feelings and emotions to see the child's value and potential.
